Book: Mosquitoland by David Arnold
Summary: When Mim Malone finds out that her mother is sick, she leaves Mississippi, where she is living with her father and her new stepmother, Kathy, and heads for Cleveland on a Greyhound. Along the way, she has many experiences as she meets and loses new people; some are amazing, and some are horrible.
I was excited to read this book because I saw it on my favourite book instagram account, blueeyedbiblio, and it definitely lived up to my expectations. The characters were my favourite part of the book; they were well-developed and quirky, and many of them were very likable. Mim’s story was engaging as you followed her through good times and bad on the Greyhound bus. The story had many happy parts, but also sad or dramatic parts, especially in the flashbacks. Throughout the book, there were emails written to Isabel, who you meet later on in the story. The emails are listing reasons she is going on the trip. There are also many flashbacks to Mim’s childhood and what led to her parents’ divorce and to her father marrying Kathy, who was their waitress at Denny’s. The flashbacks and emails really added a lot to the story and tied it together.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes reading YA fiction without any fantasy in it, and reading books with real-life situations and humour.
